Statement
I am interested in the concept of realities created by the interaction between the conscious, subconscious and unconscious mind and how this impacts on shaping lives. In particular, how an encounter with something familiar (for instance an object, activity, song, a place) can trigger unsettling memories and conjure conflicting emotions.
My practice usually begins with an exploration of ideas through observations, drawings, photographs. I often borrow from myth, psychology, familiar gestures, figures of speech, literature and other cultural touchstones. Materials are selected for their particular properties in order to suggest paradoxical states such as permanence, transience, fragility and strength. I become immersed in processes which allow me to explore the limitations of a medium and experience that magical transformation from an invisible thought or text into a 3D form. I hope to create an interesting visual dimension that resonates at some level and raises questions about personal reactions.
